PHASE 2 - BUILD DAY

July 23rd, Saturday at 8:30am the street hockey asphalt area will be installed. Dedication ceremony for the Wabana Volunteer Fire Department to follow later in the day.


Cancelled due to rain forecasted for the morning - July 16, 2011 at 8:30am will see adult volunteers come together to see the installation of 84x50 asphalt area for street hockey, 3 horse shoe pits, soccer nets, 20x15 asphalt hopscotch area, picnic tables and garbage containers. NOTE - Sept/Oct. will see the installation of a basketball court in the lower park area.

Dedication Ceremony - 4:00pm dedication of the lower park area to the Wabana Volunteer Fire Department will take place. Come show you support.

Anyone wishing to help can drop by to see what they can do, should you like to drop by with snack for the volunteers that would be great. See you at the Helping Hands Park.

Build Day Help Needed

Build Day is scheduled for July 16, Saturday and once again the playground needs help for installation of equipment and asphalt. If you are able and can help out with this type of work for a day for a great cause please let us know. You can contact us at bellisland.playground@gmail.com. PHASE 2 - BUILD DAY

Phase 2 of the Helping Hands Park will see the installation of outdoor street hockey, basketball, soccer nets, old fashion play area, horseshoe pits, picnic tables, and garbage cans. The majority of this is scheduled to take place on July 16.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to help this great cause please do so with the link on this site. All funds will be used for phase 2 and towards phase 3 in 2012.

Current Update

Thanks to everyone once again for all your support in our Helping Hands Park. At this time it was hoped that all finances would be received. The committee is still awaiting for the go ahead on some funding requested - which we should know soon. As soon as the final amounts are in we will let everyone know. From our calculations (should this funding come through) as a community we have reached our goal. Postings will be soon.

Build Day



The Bell Island Playground Project Committee and every resident thanks those that contributed in any way, shape or form to this project.

Tunes & Tales With Kelly Russell

Tuesday, July 27th at 8:00pm at the Legion - Kelly Russell will perform an evening of Tunes & Tales with all proceeds in aid of the Playground Project. Tickets are $10.00 at the door - and you will be truly entertained with story and song of true Newfoundland tradition. Prizes/ticket draws.

Correction: there will be no access for under 19. A great success and fun had by all. Thank you so much Kelly, Tonya, Naomi and Tamsyn along with the R.C. Legion for your contribution to this great project.

Signage/Memorial Assistance and Build Day Needs

The community park will soon be a reality - your help is needed. The park need signage stating the name of the park and a memorial stating the dedication of the park. A story book display would be great for this.


This is where the help is needed - we will need the following:
- 4x4's pressure treated
- Signage stating the name of the park
- Interpretation Display of the dedication
- 2x10's or wider for signage area

- Build day we need food for volunteer workers, canopy tents, refreshments, etc.

As a community we will work together and make this happen.

The Jessica Campaign

The Jessica Campaign has become a supporter of the Bell Island Playground Project. This year Bell Island is also included in the annual "The Jessica Campaign Safety Week" which is August 1 to 7. As part of safety awareness there will be a bike-a-thon on Sunday, August 1 at 10:00am starting from the RCMP station. Helmet must be worn during the bike-a-thon. Every $10.00 in sponsors received a ticket will be given for a chance to win 1 of 50 helmets. One win per entrant. Great way to get a new helmet and show support for the Playground Project and The Jessica Campaign. Sponsor sheets can be obtained from any committee member or call 488-3505 or www.thejessicacampaign.com.

What a great success. We had several booths. Thanks to The Tucker Family, Rhiannon, Emily, Nicole, Ashley, Lori, Stephanie, and the committee for helping make the day great. Thanks to everyone for helping set things up. Close to $3000.00 was raised today from booths and donations from Extreme DJ Services, Walter Dicks Ltd., Bell Island Sr. Blue Hockey team, Bell Island Wanted hockey team, and various community people. Thank you so much for everyone giving from the heart and showing spirit. The community support all day and evening long was overwhelming with pride in our community. Thank you everyone.

Fish & Brewis being sold throughout the island by various people in aid of the playground project.  $7.00 per tub to be picked up at St. Augustine's School on July 13 between 1:00pm and 5:00pm.  To order yours see a committee member, call 488-2111 or email bellisland.playground@gmail.com.  Support the cause and have a little bit of Newfoundland tradition.  If you do not get your ticket before hand please drop by the school and pick up a tub on Tuesday.

Please come to any event you may be able to and help support your community. This may be your chance to fit into the puzzle, whether it be volunteering to help at any of these events or just showing up, every little thing helps. We still need many more volunteers to get everything done for the big day everyone can do something from planting a garden, to assembling the equipement, to making a link chain for the opening ceremonies with the kids. Our New Playground!

Hey Everyone! This is the first rendition of our new playground! Some minor tweaks will be made in the coming weeks but this is it! We can't wait to see it for real and see the children having fun. There is a swing set but it is just not in the picture so no one panic. Don't forget we still need many more volunteers and you can help us out by clicking the button on your right.

Our DOT-Mocracy

Today we had our Dot-Mocracy at St. Augustine's Elementary School and it was a huge success! It was pure joy to see the excitement on these children's faces when they saw all that they could now have to be free and play on!
